Medication

In the challenge of ensuring animal welfare in livestock farming, one of the crucial issues to address is antibiotic resistance. Among the five pillars of animal welfare, it is essential to ensure freedom from diseases, but it is equally important to consider the risk of excessive use of medication. Besides being a waste of resources, the misuse of antibiotics can contribute to the spread of antibiotic resistance. For this reason, the San Lorenzo Cooperative is actively training its farmers on the topic of prevention and monitoring of animal health through the Farmaco project, carried out in collaboration with the Order of Veterinarians of Mantua and the wholesaler Gatti Zootecnici.

The San Lorenzo Cooperative recognizes the importance of adopting a holistic approach to ensure animal welfare. Through the Farmaco project, farmers are trained on best practices for the prevention and monitoring of animal health. This includes preventive vaccination campaigns and ongoing monitoring of animal welfare conditions to identify and address any health issues promptly.

One of the main goals of the Farmaco project is to reduce the use of non-essential medications in livestock farming. This is achieved by investing in creating healthier and less stressful environments for animals. The Cooperative is committed to promoting practices that respect the natural rhythms of animals, allowing them to live in conditions that are more suitable for their needs. This means reducing the need for pharmacological interventions and promoting a more sustainable management of resources.

Thanks to the holistic approach and proper medication management, the San Lorenzo Cooperative is committed to achieving healthier animals in livestock farming. This translates into higher quality and more sustainable animal-derived products on our tables. Food from healthy and well-cared-for animals represents a more environmentally responsible choice and contributes to promoting a more sustainable food system overall.
