Animal Welfare: A Commitment to Ethical and Sustainable Dairy Production

In recent years, animal welfare has become a key concern for consumers, producers, and farmers.

Providing for their well-being goes beyond basic farming practices such as proper housing, hygiene, nutrition, and health. It also requires an understanding of their mental state and ensuring they can express natural behaviors in harmony with their environment.

The Brambell Report (1965) and the subsequent Farm Animal Welfare Council (1979) established the Five Freedoms, a crucial framework for evaluating animal welfare:

  • Freedom from hunger and thirst
  • Freedom from discomfort
  • Freedom from pain, injury, or disease
  • Freedom to express natural behaviors
  • Freedom from fear and distress

At Arrigoni Battista, a leading producer of Gorgonzola and Taleggio DOP, animal welfare is a shared responsibility across the entire production chain. Through long-standing partnerships with farmers, we have developed specific assessment plans to continuously monitor and improve farming conditions. This approach not only promotes better living conditions for animals but also ensures the highest quality milk, essential for producing premium cheeses.

In 2020, we strengthened our commitment by adopting ClassyFarm, an integrated system developed by the Italian Ministry of Health to assess farms based on animal welfare, nutrition, biosecurity, and medication use. This rigorous protocol includes over 90 assessment criteria, all verified by certified veterinarians. Thanks to close collaboration with our suppliers, today, 100% of the milk used in Arrigoni Battista cheeses comes from ClassyFarm-certified farms.

Our commitment to animal welfare does not stop here. We are now taking further steps to integrate even stricter welfare criteria into our supplier contracts and initiate accredited certification, ensuring compliance with the highest industry standards in both farming practices and final products.

Animal welfare is more than just a regulatory obligation—it is a core value that defines our vision for the dairy industry. Through responsible sourcing, sustainability, and continuous improvement, we are dedicated to producing high-quality cheeses that respect the environment, animals, and consumers.
